Makerere University’s new Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Sarah Ssali, officially assumed office today in a handover ceremony marked by both pomp and emotion.
The morning event saw outgoing office bearer Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi formally pass the mantle to Prof. Ssali, in the presence of the university’s top management, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe. Members of Prof. Ssali’s family also attended, underscoring the significance of the moment.
Prof. Ssali, who was recently appointed to the role by the Chancellor, steps in with a reputation for both scholarly rigor and proven administrative ability. In her address, she pledged to build on the legacy of her predecessors and to strengthen the university’s core pillars of teaching, learning, and research.
“This is not just a personal milestone,” she said, “but a call to serve the institution, its staff, and students with renewed commitment to excellence.”
Prof. Nawangwe, in his remarks, praised Prof. Ssali’s academic leadership and expressed confidence that she would steer the division of Academic Affairs to greater heights.
The appointment is seen as a strategic move to consolidate Makerere’s position as a leading institution in the region, especially as it continues to expand its research footprint and sharpen its academic standards.
