NEC Commits to League Action Amid Format Dispute

NEC FC have confirmed that they will fulfil their Uganda Premier League fixture against URA FC this Thursday at the Nakivubo Stadium, dispelling doubts over their participation in the new season.

The announcement follows recent uncertainty after NEC, along with SC Villa and Vipers SC, walked out of a league meeting earlier this month in protest against the newly adopted competition format, which was approved by the majority of clubs.

In a statement released via their official social media platforms, the club noted: “The focus shifts to the mandatory fixture, which we must play despite our disagreement with the new league format, as other engagements continue.”

NEC were absent on the opening matchday due to their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup, from which they were eliminated on Saturday by Nairobi United.

Under the stewardship of head coach Hussein Mbalangu, the side enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, finishing second with 67 points, just two behind eventual champions Vipers SC.

With several new additions to the squad, the club remains optimistic of challenging for honours this term.

While NEC’s position has now been clarified, Villa and Vipers are yet to make their intentions known, casting doubt over Saturday’s scheduled double-header fixtures.
