BREAKING!! Ham Kiggundu Could Be Arrested Over Unauthorized Nakivubo Channel Project As High Profile Ugandans Run To Court

Kampala businessman Haji Hamis Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham, is facing legal action over his ongoing Nakivubo Channel development. Senior lawyers, together with the Attorney General and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), have been dragged to court in a high-profile public interest case.
The lawsuit was filed by lawyers Naafi Kazinda and Samuel Oola. They claim that Kiggundu’s development of the channel is being done without an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), posing serious environmental and health risks to the surrounding communities.
The petitioners argue that President Museveni’s directive allowing Kiggundu to proceed with the project is unconstitutional and bypasses statutory procedures. This has sparked concerns over the legality of the entire project.
Among the key demands of the lawsuit are a permanent injunction to stop further construction on the Nakivubo Channel, cancellation of the presidential directive, and a comprehensive environmental audit by NEMA.
The lawyers are also seeking damages from Kiggundu and want the Nakivubo drainage channel restored to its original state. They insist that accountability and adherence to environmental laws are critical for Kampala’s development.
The project has divided public opinion. Some people support the development, believing it could help reduce flooding and improve safety in the area. Others, including Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, argue that the project is illegal and could cause environmental harm. Lukwago has petitioned Parliament to intervene and safeguard public property.
The lawsuit reflects growing efforts to enforce environmental protection and ensure that urban development projects follow proper legal procedures. The outcome of the case will determine whether Kiggundu can continue the construction without proper approvals.
On the ground, work on the Nakivubo Channel is progressing rapidly. Workers, engineers, and technical teams are actively covering the open river flow, using heavy machinery to construct structures that are already beginning to take shape.
The case has attracted public attention because it raises questions about the balance between development and environmental responsibility. Many are watching closely to see if Kiggundu will face legal consequences, including a potential arrest.
As the lawsuit unfolds, it underscores the importance of accountability in urban development projects. Legal experts say the case could set a precedent for how future projects are managed in Kampala
