Vipers Progress to Second Preliminary Round of CAF Champions League

Vipers SC sealed their place in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after edging Namibia’s African Stars 1-0 on Saturday at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

The Venoms, who had taken a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Cape Town courtesy of Hillary Mukundane, wrapped up the tie 2-0 on aggregate.

Yunus Sentamu scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, pouncing on a defensive lapse before calmly rolling the ball into an empty net.

The visitors had earlier threatened to level the tie when Edgar Kamatuka’s effort struck the post on the half-hour mark, but Vipers soon regained control and dictated the rhythm of the game.

Sentamu nearly doubled his tally in the 75th minute after finding himself through on goal, only to squander the chance with just the goalkeeper to beat.

With the victory, Vipers advance to the next round where they will face the winner between Zambia’s Power Dynamos and Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas for a slot in the lucrative group stages.

Vipers – Denis Kiggundu, Ashraf Mandela, Enock Luyima, Hillary Mukundane, Kevin Dasylva, Taddeo Lwanga, Karim Watambala, Enock Ssebaggala, Allan Okello, Robin Hney, Yunus Sentamu.
