Four KIU Students Involved in Grisly Road Crash

Four students from Kampala International University (KIU), Ishaka campus, are fighting for their lives after a horrific road accident along the Katwe–Kabatoro–Kasese road.

The students — Julius Manyardi, Angelina Akello, Marvin Oyesiga, and Eric Acidri — were travelling in a Toyota Premio (registration number UBM 473N) when the car, driven by Benard Emwodu, lost control and overturned several times.

Police say the group had been returning from a sightseeing trip to Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most popular tourist destinations, when the crash occurred.

Rwenzori East Regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime confirmed that officers from Katwe-Kabatoro Division responded swiftly to the scene and rushed the injured to Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital in Kasese town for emergency treatment.

“Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was travelling at excessive speed, which likely caused the driver to lose control,” Tumushime said. He added that patrols have been intensified along major roads in Kasese district to curb reckless driving.

Kasese, a key gateway to Uganda’s national parks and the Democratic Republic of Congo border, has in recent years witnessed a spike in traffic accidents. Most of them, police say, stem from overspeeding and driver fatigue.
