City Oilers drew first blood in their best-of-three National Basketball League quarterfinal series with a 77-62 victory over JT Jaguars on Tuesday night at Lugogo.
The defending champions paraded their new signings Chad Bowie and Kurt Curry Wegscheider for the first time, following clearance by the FUBA Appeals Committee which dismissed a protest from Jaguars.
The duo wasted no time making their presence felt—Bowie finishing with 16 points while Wegscheider added 10 before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Despite the final margin, it was the Jaguars who dictated early rhythm, taking a 37-33 halftime lead. But the Oilers stormed back with a commanding 21-7 third quarter run that turned the game in their favor.
Moses Maker chipped in with 13 points as the Oilers overcame a rebounding deficit (49-55) to claim the series opener.
Jaguars, meanwhile, struggled with execution—committing 27 turnovers and shooting a dismal 3-of-21 from three-point range.
John Eboyu tried to unsettle the Oilers’ new recruits with relentless pressure and trash talking, while Peter Sifuma and Ian Lubwama scored 13 points apiece, Sifuma also hauling down 12 rebounds in a losing effort.
With the loss, Sudi Ulanga and his Jaguars side now face elimination and will have to regroup quickly ahead of Thursday’s do-or-die Game Two.
