The second round of the 2025 Johnnie Walker Uganda Professional Open was marred by torrential rains at the par-71 Lugazi Hills and Country Club.
15 Ugandans, including 6 amateurs made the cut after the first 36 holes.
These are among the 37 players who progressed to the third round on Friday and will partake on the prize money kitty of Ug.Shs 150M.
Newly crowned amateur open Joseph Cwinya-ai leads the cast of Ugandans after a grueling round marred by heavy rains.
Others are; Ronald Rugumayo, Ibrahim Ssemakula (amateur), Marvin Kibirige, David Kamulindwa, Joshua Seale, Abraham Ainamani, Phillip Kasozi, Anthony Otukei (amateur), Joseph Reagan Akena (amateur), Ronald Otile, Derrick Musana (amateur), Silver Opio and Hussein Bagalana.
Kenya’s legendary professional Dismas Indiza is aloft the crop with a single shot lead.
Indiza played 1-over-72 during round two and eyes to consolidate the lead.
“It was a fair round on day two where I struggled with my putting. Nonetheless, I am happy to remain 1-under overall coming to round three” Indiza remarked.
Fresh from clinching the Uganda Amateur Open, Cwinya-ai played 3-under-68 the round.
Cwinya-ai, David Wakhu, Njoroge Kibugu and Rwanda’s Celestine Nsanzuwera are all level-par.
Overnight leader Ronald Rugumayo played a dismissal 5-over-76 during round two and lies joint sixth with Robson Chinhoi (Zimbabwe) and Ugandan amateur Ibrahim Ssemakula.
“It was a tough round” Rugumayo admitted. “The early tee-off messed my game. Even the putting was a problem” he added.
Ugandan pro Marvin Kibirige and Nigeria’s Francis Epe both played 2-under-69 and are joint ninth.
Epe from Lagos city believes he has the impetus to win this championship.
“I believe I can win the 2025 Uganda Pros open.” Epe who returned 2-under-69 on Thursday vowed.
Round three swings off on Friday morning as golfers eye for a strong finishing come Saturday.
The professionals are playing for a total kitty of Ug.Shs 150,000,000.
