Caf Confederation Cup: Why Kitara will host Libyan opponents in Libya

Kitara have opted to host their Libyan counterparts Al Hilal Benghazi in Libya in the first-round preliminary match in the Caf Confederation Cup.

The Uganda Cup winners submitted Mandela National stadium, Namboole as their home for the competition but with works ongoing to lay the running track at the venue, it won’t be able to host the match on those stipulated dates.

“The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Kitara Football Club will host the first leg of the 1st preliminary round of the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup against Al Hilal Benghazi in Libya,” read a statement on the club website.

“The match is scheduled for Friday, August 16 at the Benina – Martyrs Stadium (artificial turf), with kick-off set for 8 pm Ugandan time.

“Kitara had initially hoped to host the match in the country but unforeseen circumstances made this unworkable. The return leg will be played at the same venue a week later.”

There are reports that Kitara sought St. Mary’s stadium, Kitende, the only other Caf approved stadium for the intercontinental club matches but the management say it is already booked on that date according to a letter circulating on social media.
