Ugandan swimmer Jesse Ssengonzi Ssuubi arrived in the Rench city of Paris for the 2024 Olympics with a couple of ambitions to fulfil.

Fast forward, the US-based swimmer was ready to gel with the world’s finest swimmers and he needed to better his seasonal times in the 100m Butterfly category.

As Ssengonzi competed at the Paris La Defense Arena, he was only the 8th male Ugandan swimmer at the Olympics since Los Angeles (1984).

The D-Moment eventually arrived when Ssengonzi and seven other swimmers competed in the 100m Butterfly race in Heat 1.

He gallantly swam 53.76, a new National Record over the distance, coming second in the heat won by Miljenic Nikola (53.32) of Croatia.

Indonesia’s Joe Kurniawan finished third with 53.95, Milos Milenkovic (Montenegro) was fourth (54.26), Jamaican Josh Kirlew completed the race in 5th position (54.66), Rwanda’s Oscar Cyusa Peyre Mitilla followed with 58.77, Iraq’s Al Zinkee Hasan Ali Khaleel (1:00.23) and Yemen’s Nasser Yusuf Marwan Abdullah (1:08.72).

Ssengonzi is humbled by the performance he put up during the Heat.

“I am humbled by my performance especially improving my personal time and setting a new national record,” Ssengonzi noted.

Meanwhile, Heat 2 was won by China’s Sun Jiajun with a time of 51.85. Hungary’s Milak Kristof clocked 50.19 to take heat 3.

Frenchman Grousset Maxime won heat 4 with 50.65 whilst Canada’s Liendo Josh won heat 5 with 50.55.

Ssengonzi is excited by the opportunity to compete with the world’s best swimmers at the world’s biggest sporting event; the Olympics.

“I am super excited to compete at the Olympics with the best swimmers. This is a great turning point in my career and I focused on doing the best every day,” Ssengonzi remarked.
