Uganda Cranes Select team came from a goal down to beat league champions SC Villa 2-1 at the MTN Omondi stadium, Lugogo on Saturday.

Youngster Godfrey Ssekibengo scored the winner late in the game to give Sam Ssimbwa coached side an advantage ahead of the return leg on Wednesday at the same venue.

Arnold Odong gave Villa the deserved lead in the 25th minute tapping in at the far post from a flicked ball following David Owori free kick after Hakim Kiwanuka was fouled.

The lead lasted four minutes as referee George Olemu awarded what appeared a dubious penalty to the Select team adjudging Villa’s Edward Masembe to have fouled Isaac Ogwang who dusted himself to slot home.

Villa dominated the first half with Patrick Kakande the chief tormentor and even hit the bar with an audacious attempt from outside the area.

However, changes by Ssimbwa in the second half saw them get better and deservedly got the winner in the 79th minute from a well taken Ssekibengo goal from outside the area.

The two teams will face again next week with the aggregate winner advancing to the semis while the loser will play classification matches.

In the earlier match, KCCA lost 1-0 against Kitara through a Denis Omedi strike.
