Tragedy Strikes Muni University: Three Staff Killed in Road Crash

Muni University is in mourning after three of its staff members were killed in a fatal road accident in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The victims have been named as Rev. Canon Patrick Acema, Chaplain of the Advent of Christ Chapel; Mr. Washington Opiyo, the university’s Senior Sports Tutor; and Mr. Kennedy Acidri, who was driving the vehicle.

According to an official statement issued by Vice Chancellor Assoc. Prof. Simon Anguma Katrini, the trio was traveling back to Arua from official duty in Kampala when tragedy struck on the Pakwach road on September 27, 2025.

“This is a profound loss to the University Council, Senate, Management, Staff and Students,” the Vice Chancellor said in the statement, adding that details of the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.

This is the latest in a series of road crashes to claim the lives of professionals on duty in Uganda, with many pointing to poor road safety, fatigue, and hazardous night travel as recurring dangers.

At Muni University, grief has spread quickly across the community. Students and colleagues described the late Rev. Canon Acema as a spiritual pillar on campus, while Mr. Opiyo was known for his tireless commitment to sports and student welfare.

As mourners gather to pay their respects, the question of road safety once again looms large. For now, the university community is united in prayer and remembrance.

“May their souls rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
