Peruth Chemutai to run for Steeplechase gold at World Athletics Championships

Peruth Chemutai will be running for a world title after cruising to the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase final on Monday.

Chemutai is in fine form and posted the best qualifying time, topping the fast-paced Heat 3 of the event at the Japan National Stadium.

The 2020 Olympic champion who claimed the title on the same track back in 2021 posted a time of 9:07.68, the best across the three heats.

Kenya’s Doris Lemngole (9:08.97), and Ethiopia’s Lomi Muleta (9:12.20) finshed behind Chemutai.

Defending champion Winfred Mutile Yavi of Bahrain topped Heat 2 with a time of 9:15.63 while the 2023 bronze medalist Faith Cherotich (9:13.95) topped Heat 1 with Norah Jeruto of Kazakhstan posting 9:14.25 for second place in. the heat.

Cherotich, Yavi, and Jeruto will be the top challengers to Chamutai for the medals. Lemngole and Muleta will also be in the mix.

The medal race for the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase takes place tomorrow (Wednesday, September 157) at 3:57 p.m. (EAT)
