The 2024 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games 2 officially commenced at the Soroti city main stadium on the evening of Thursday, 11th July.

A grand total of 6228 participants are gathered for the week-long championship that accommodates the different sports disciplines in volleyball (boys and girls), netball (girls), handball (boys and girls), 3X3 basketball (boys and girls) and rugby 7’s (boys and girls), cross country and athletics (boys and girls).

These games are a precursor to the upcoming FEASSSA Games that will be co-hosted by Bukedea Comprehensive School and Amus College, still in Teso zone.

The official opening ceremony was graced by participating students from the different schools (about 344 school teams), officials (coaches, trainers, umpires and referees), school leaders, ministry of education and sports officials, politicians as well as fans from all walks of life.

There was a band procession from the school as the school buses, coasters, taxis and other vehicles followed with passion to the Soroti main stadium where the official opening festivities were held.

The host (Teso College Aloet) head coach Julius Opasso warmly welcomed the guests and participants in these games.

Opasso hinted on the value of such games as teamwork, talent development, recreation among others.

Hajji Twahil Kitezeela, the chairperson of the local organizing committee commended the varying parties as Government, Ministry of education and sports, USSSA, organizing USSSA regions, schools, students, media and the officials for the collective roles undertaken to ensure that the games are successful.

I want to thank the different stakeholders who have joined hands together to ensure that we have successful games. These games provide entertainment, fun, build intellectual capacity, build careers among other purposes. In a special way, I want to thank the Executive committee of USSSA and all the representatives from the different zones for pulling this off. He also pointed of the 869 students enrolled for capacity building at these games in the various dockets of refereeing, coaching, media and others.

The Soroti city mayor Joshua Edogu lauded the organizers for selecting Soroti as the host of games of this magnitude.

“I warmly welcome all the participants and guests to Soroti city. I want to thank Government of Uganda as well as the ministry of education and sports for the choice of Soroti for hosting these games. In a special way, I want to thank Teso College Aloet management for hosting all the students and the games.” Edogu appreciated.

USSSA president Justus Mugisha was full of praise for Government of Uganda and schools which have financed these games.

“I want to thank Government of the Republic of Uganda for financing the USSSA Ball Games 2.” Mugisha lauded.

“Uganda as a country shall also compete in 2024 FEASSSA Games which will also be hosted in Teso region at Bukedea Comprehensive and Amus College School. The USSSA Ball Games 2 are qualifiers for FEASSSA Games. We also competed internationally in Volleyball (Serbia), ISF football (China), World Cross Country (Kenya), Basketball (China) and CAF Schools football (Zanzibar). We thank God for the granting us First Lady as the minister, Hon. Peter Ogwang as state minister for sports and the commissioner for the work executed” Mugisha, also the FEASSSA president added.

James Small Chemutai, the RCC Soroti assured of good security for the entire duration of the games.

The chief guest, Rev. Dr. Canon Duncans Mugumya (Commissioner in the ministry of education and sports), who represented the state minister for sports Hon Peter Ogwang once again condemned the use of non-bonafide students in school competitions.

“We are having a brave fight against the use of non-bonafide students in school sports” Rev. Dr Mugumya echoed aloud.

He fronted the element of sports for healthy living among other benefits, appreciating the leaders in Soroti city for the collective effort to organize these games.

There were different 100M heat races for both boys and girls as part of the menu on the athletics rooster.

Friday, 12th July 2024 witnessed match day three of action in volleyball, basketball, rugby 7’s, handball and netball.

These games will climax on the 17th July 2024.
