Uganda’s Leonard Chemutai qualified for the men’s final in the 3000m steeple-chase event at the on-going Paris 2024 Olympics in France.

Chemutai was second in heat 1 with a time of 8:18.19 coming behind Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali (8:17:90) at Stade de France on Monday evening.

Heat 2 was won by Mohamed Tindouft from Morocco (8:10:62) who crossed the finishing line ahead of Ethiopian Samuel Firewu (8:11.61).

Ethiopian Lamecha Girma won heat 3 with 8:23.89 ahead of United States of America’s Kenneth Rooks (8:24.95).

The men final will come on Wednesday, 7th August 2024. Leonard joins the final alongside another Ugandan, Peruth Chemutai who also advanced to the finals.

Leonard Chemutai is the fourth male Ugandan steeplechaser at the prestigious Olympic Games after Benjamin Kiplagat (deceased), Jacob Araptany and Albert Chemutai.

Meanwhile, Uganda’s sprinter Tarsis Orogot won heat 2 in the men’s 200m to qualify for the semi-finals.

The US based athlete won heat 2 with a time of 20:32 ahead of Bahamas’ McCoy (20:35).

Brazilian Correa came third with 20:41 and Jamaican Hudson was fourth with 20.53.

In heat 4, US’ Bednarek posted 19.96 to win the heat whilst Liberian Joseph Fahnbulleh posted 20.20 to win heat 1.

Botswana sprinter Letsile Tebogo won heat 3 with 20.10.

Heat 5 was won by US sprinter Erriyon Knighton with a time of 19.99 ahead of Zimbabwe’s Tapiwanashe Makarawu (20.07).

Uganda has not had a male sprinter at the Olympics since bronze medalist Davis Kamoga at Atlanta 1996.
