Dancehall’s future in Uganda: Cindy Sanyu shares her thoughts

Cindy Sanyu has shared her thoughts on the alleged decline of dancehall music in Uganda, a genre she has long been associated with.
Over the years, Ugandan audiences have increasingly embraced newer sounds such as Amapiano and Afrobeat, leaving many to question the future of dancehall in the country.
Cindy agrees with this observation, noting that artists can no longer rely solely on the genre to remain relevant.
I understand where that’s coming from and I also try to adapt because I know only dancehall can’t keep me relevant. You see a song like See You Tonight, that’s Afrobeat.
While Cindy acknowledges the shifting musical trends, she maintains that dancehall is still at the core of her identity as an artist.
Dancehall is what defines me and gave me the name. So I have to keep that identity alive while mixing in new genres and serving everyone.
Cindy further noted that versatility is now a necessity for survival in the Ugandan music industry.
It is true dancehall alone cannot sustain an artist in the industry according to the pace we are on.
