The 83rd Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Golf Open championship continues to produce its expected thrills, sparks and surprises.

After 36, the leaderboard has taken a new twist with improvements and definitely depreciation.

A new leader Joseph Cwinya-ai is aloft the rest of the pack with a single shot lead off second placed Joseph Reagan Akena.

Cwinya-ai scored 2-over 73 during round two to make it 145 gross following an earlier 1-over score during round one.

“I am happy to lead. At the same time, I am shocked to be leading. I made some mistakes during the round” Cwinya-ai, a former winner of the open in 2021 attested.

Cwinya-ai’s score card read four birdies on holes 8, 10, 11 and 18 with an eye catching eagle on hole 12.

He had six pars and bogies apiece with 1 double boggie on the tricky dog-legged hole 17.

Closly following Cwinya-ai is Lugazi Hills and Country Club’s Akena (146) as the duo of Abdul Kakeeto and the seasoned Michael Tumusiime are tied in third position with 148 gross marks, apiece.

The top four golfers by close of business on round two; Cwinya-ai, Akena, Kakeeto and Tumusiime will tee off in the main pressure group at 1:10 PM during round three on Friday, 30th August 2024.

The second pressure group will tee off 10 minutes earlier and will comprise of Abdallah Kakooza, Titus Okwong, Samuel Bazaale and Ibrahim Ssemakula.

At 12:50 PM will have the third pressure group that has the day one leader Adel Balala, John Musimenta, Elton Thembo and Joseph Kasozi.

Defending champion Godfrey Nsubuga made a massive improvement with a giant leap from a catastrophic 82 to 1-over 72 to join the top 15 frey.

Nsubuga drives off round three at 12:40 PM with Paul Habyarimana, Kenya’s Ebill Omolo and Entebbe club’s Musa Kirya.

The prestigious Uganda Golf Open which has been played since 1932.

H. Davidson won the inaugural edition. The open only missed out on two different occasions; between 1940-1947 (World War) and 1979-1980 (Political insurgency in Uganda).

Legendary Sadi Onito (Rest in Peace), from Jinja Golf Club, has the record number of titles won (12) in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1996.

Johnnie Walker is the headline sponsor of this year’s open that has attracted players from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan and Rwanda.
