Uganda’s Cyclist Charles Kagimu made history by becoming the first competitor from the East African land-locked country to complete the grueling road race whose total kilometres was 273.

Kagimu used the S-Works model bike for the competition, the same model used by the race winner, Remco Evenepoel from Belgium.

This bike is worthy $20,000 (about Ug.Shs 74,000,000) on the market and was procured by the Government of Uganda for Kagimu.

He is humbled for the contribution by the Government towards such a valuable asset that he used to gel with the big boys in the industry.

“I am more than happy for the Government that helped me acquire such a bike to compete at the Olympic Games in Paris, France.” Kagimu hinted of the bike.

This bike is an S-Works S-L8 model (from Specialized company). Its tyres are from Vittoria Corsa Pro (Graphene – Cotton Tech).

The Carbon fibre bike weighs approximately 7 kilograms (minimum recommended weight).

“It is quite a responsive light bike and really fast. It was tested in the wind tunnel and passed the tests” Kagimu speaks of the bike that he also fixed a bicycle computer and a power meter.

A grueling total of 273 kilometres were covered by the cyclists with 2800m of elevation.

Belgian Remco Evenepoel became the first male cyclist in history to win the cycling road race and time trial at the single Olympic games in the shadow of the famous Eiffel Tower in France’s capital city.

Evenepoel, 24, clocked 6:19:34 to beat the field that had 99 cyclists.

Two French cyclists Valentin Madouas and Christophe Laporte settled for silver and bronze respectively.

Madouas, 28, covered the total distance in 6:20:45 as Laporte, 31, covered the same distance in 6:20:50.

Kagimu became the first Ugandan to complete the road race in the Olympics with a timing of 6:50:49.

He speaks of the strategy deployed during this race that managed him to remain in the leading pack for more than half of the race.

“The strategy during the race was to break-away in the leading pack before burning out. I enjoyed every moment in the pack and the hype that comes with being in the leading pool. I knew they were catch up with us at some stage” he narrates.

Kagimu, 25, finished in the 77th position with 13 other cyclists not able to complete the race under warm weather conditions.

Ishaka Bukenya, head coach for Kagimu was left a delighted party after completing the race.

“The plan and strategy was to complete the race against all the odds. Kagimu gave his best effort to complete. We did not encounter any problems along the way” Bukenya reveals.
