Four years ago, Jackson “Uncle Money” Ssewanyana was slapped to a 4-year jail sentence by Buganda Road chief magistrate Miriam Okello over suspected manslaughter.

Ssewanyana, then a local leader in Kasubi village, a suburb in Kampala was accused of influence in the mob attack to a one Hakim Siraje Tumusiime, now deceased who was allegedly accused of snatching a cell-phone in 2019.

When Ssewanyana was sentenced in 2021, it was doom for himself, family members, close friends, fans and the football fraternity which he had served passionately with diligence.

Upon release last October, he swiftly returned to his old odd job of cheering the Uganda Cranes, the national football team.

Team Uncle Money drumming

Three months ago, MTN Uganda, the leading Uganda Cranes sponsor announced a competition for fans.

Ssewanyana and team hitherto Team Uncle Money did not hesitate to take part alongside other competitors countrywide.

On Friday, 12th July 2024, it was euphoric in the atmosphere at the MTN Uganda main headquarters when Team Uncle Money was declared the winner.

This was after tallying a massive 44,464 votes (via online and other means), beating second placed Team Dressers (38,286 votes) and team Kamodo (25,234 votes).

“This is unbelievable” Ssewanyana sighed upon the announcement that comes with a prize tag of Ug.shs 5,000,000 and the honor of leading Uganda Cranes cheerleading efforts.

“I am so happy to be declared the official cheerleader of Uganda Cranes” he stammered in sheer excitement.

Uncle Money delivers his acknowledgement speech

“It was not an easy journey but am so thankful to the Ugandans who have trusted me with the mantle to be their official cheerleader.” the staunch Express Football Club fan added.

New beginning:

Ssewanyana who has in the past steered Uganda Cranes fans right from the epoch of Dr Lawrence Mulindwa as FUFA President to the times of the current FA leader Eng. Hon. Hassim Moses Magogo tagged this feat as a new beginning.

It is a indeed a new tiding for the man who spent over 155 weeks in Kitalya prison cells.

I promise that this is just the start of a new beginning where am positive that we shall achieve a lot of things with MTN and Uganda Cranes. I thank MTN for believing in the common otherwise they would have picked any celeb out there to take on this position. I call upon all fans to support the beautiful game but with discipline. Football should put us together rather than separate us. I know together with MTN we shall hold a number of campaigns to teach fans better ways of supporting our national team in several creative but fun ways. Sen Somdev, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Uganda was equally ecstatic as he drummed during the announcement.

In the same vein, Somdev rallied fans to be great ambassadors of football and Uganda Cranes in particular at all times, in a disciplined, systematic and organized way.

Today has put a smile on my face to see fans of Uganda Cranes sit in one room with joy. We started this campaign sometime back and am glad we have crowned it on a high note. As MTN, we promise to move with Uganda as we seek to achieve unmeasurable glory. MTN’s primary responsibility is to bring back the passion of Uganda Cranes and football in this country. So this event does not climax our target but rather starts the journey because there is a lot of excitement football because I cannot wait to go back to Namboole. I request you to all promise me that we shall support Uganda Cranes through all seasons. I want this madness and fire to keep growing so that we attract more fans to rally behind the boys.” Sen Somdev, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Uganda

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) had a strong representation led by the vice president marketing Rogers Byamukama among others.

The campaign was christened “Show us your Fayaaa” lasting for at least 60 days.
