Platinum Credit Heathens Rugby Club are odds-on favourites to win the men’s Cup Final at the 2024 Entebbe 7s. They have assembled a stacked squad for the tournament being played from August 10-11 at the Works Grounds in Entebbe.

“For the composition of our squad, what we looked at this season is pace, physicality, and agility, including knowledge of the game by the players. Compared to the team of last season, we had the same, but we were lacking in pace in certain circuits because we had players we relied on so much and as the circuits went on, it really took a toll on majority of them,” Heathens head coach Mohammed Athio said Kawowo Sports on Day One at Entebbe.

“At least this season, we have a depth of a good team ahead of the 7s circuit.”

  • Platinum Credit Heathens Squad for 2024 Entebbe 7s:
  • 1 Ivan Claude Otema, 2 Innocent Gwokto, 3 Timothy Mugisha, 4 Nicholas Kato, 5 Paul Epillo, 6 Malcolm Daniel Okello, 7 Denis Etwau, 8 Morgan Odoch, 9 Lawrence Ssebuliba, 10 Michael Wokorach, 11 Jordan Bongomin, 12 Trevor Ochan, 13 Sulaiman Ngobi.

The twelve-man (with a thirteenth as reserve) squad includes new signings Denis Etwau and Timothy Mugisha. The contested legality of their acquisition inclusive, Etwau and Mugisha have grabbed the headlines.

Locally, they won the 2022 Nile Special 7s Series with Jinja Hippos from where they joined after sitting out two-thirds of the current season. Internationally, they are Uganda Men’s 7s internationals and have won the Africa Men’s 7s (Etwau; twice in 2016 and 2024, Mugisha; once in 2024).

“Etwau and Mugisha are good value additions to the team… former national 7s series winners, Africa 7s champions… with them being on our squad, there is a huge wealth of knowledge and expertise they bring,” Heathens coach Mohammed Athio added.

Claude Otema makes his first appearance since sustaining a knee injury against Black Pirates during the Kitgum 7s semifinal in last season’s series. The rest of the squad were active during the Uganda Cup and the Championship.

The last time Heathens won the 7s series was eleven years ago in 2013. Just by looking at the squads entered in the competition, they are, by some margin, the team to beat this year.
