The eagerly awaited men’s marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympics ended on the morning of Saturday, 10th August in France.

Hundreds of spectators from different countries thronged the main starting point at Hotel Du Ville, on the streets and at the finishing point to witness first hand.

After a gruelling two hours, six minutes and 26 micro-seconds, Ethiopian Tamirat Tola won the race under sunny conditions.

Tola’s time was also a new Olympic record, a feat wildly celebrated by a handful of Ethiopian fans including the legend Haile Haile Gebrselassie (four-time world champion and two-time Olympic champion).

Bashir Abdi (Germany) posted 2:06.47 for silver and Kenya’s Benson Kipruto settled for third place with 2:07.00.

It was a rather tough morning for Uganda’s three ambassadors in this race.

Victor Kiplangat finished 37th with a time of 2:11.59 and another Ugandan, Andrew Rotich Kwemoi completed the race in the 62nd position (2:17.28).

Steven Kissa pulled out after 25 kilometres whilst the defending champion Eliud Kipchoge did not exceed the 30 km mark.

Legendary Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele was 39th with 2:12.24.

The female marathon race will take place along the same route on the morning of Sunday, 11th August 2024.

The female marathon will be the last event before the official closing ceremony at Stade De France.
