Game 4: Uganda v New Zealand

  • Uganda 40 all out
  • New Zealand 41/1
  • New Zealand won by 9 wickets

Cricket Cranes were not a match for the Black Caps of New Zealand in their group game at the T20 Men’s World Cup in West Indies.

In a game played in Trinidad and Tobago after switching camps from Guyana, Cricket Cranes came into the match up on the back of a heavy defeat against the hosts West Indies and were looking for some redemption. However, the assignment was a tall order against a wounded Black Caps side that was hurting from being dumped out of the tournament by the hosts.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl an indication that they wanted to win easily against a less opponent.

The Cricket Cranes made some changes with Ronak Patel and Fred Achelam coming into the side to replace Frank Nsubuga and Roger Mukasa.

The dynamic duo of Trent Boult (3/4) and Tim Southee (2/7) were in their element immediately with Simon Ssesazi and Robinson Obuya losing their wickets without bothering the scorers.

At 15/5 Uganda was in trouble of setting the lowest ever World Cup record but some counter punches from Kenneth Waiswa (11) and Fred Achelam (9) helped the Cricket Cranes finish on 40 inside 19 overs, one more run than 39 they managed to score against West Indies in their 3rd game.

The run chase was over inside six overs with Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra knocking off the requirement. The only joy for the Ugandans was the wicket of Finn Allen who was strangled down the leg side off the bowling of Riazat Ali Shah.

New Zealand dominant against Uganda as they picked up their first victory of the tournament. Uganda’s maiden appearance at the global showpiece ended in defeat in Group C.

Afghanistan and West Indies progressed from the group while New Zealand, Uganda and PNG were all eliminated.

Uganda managed to pick up a win against fellow associates PNG in the group.
