Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate the 2024 Olympic Day which happens on 23rd June every year.
The celebrations for Uganda took place at Hormisdallen nursery and primary school in Gayaza, Wakiso district.
Over 3000 students from the host school and students from other schools took part in the celebrations meant to raise awareness about the Olympic ideas.
As early as 8 am, Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) officials led by executive committee member Lydia Gloria Dhamuzungu and others were at the playground of Hormisdallen nursery and primary school ready to kick start the event.
The children gathered at the school main playground all dressed in branded T-shirts with the Olympic day.
A limbering session to awaken up the bodies was conducted before stretching and briefing the pupils about the Olympic day and its essence.
“We are here to celebrate the Olympic Day which is celebrated globally. Uganda is among the countries that has joined the others to celebrate such a day. The pupils have been taught about the Olympic values of team-work, excellence, teamwork and others” Dhamuzungu stated.
There was a mini-marathon for the pupils around the school for about 2 KM that was exciting for all.
The pupils were then divided into the segments where the different Olympic games were demonstrated and actually played.
Football, Rowing (Egometer), Fencing, Badminton, Shooting, Weightlifting, Dancesport, Wrestling and Modern Pentathalon were all demonstrated to the young learners who expressed the urge to take on these games.
Another sport, Netball, which is non-Olympic was also demonstrated to the willing young girls.
The children also had a fun-tag of war rope event which interested many.
Godfrey Nickson Kalyango, the head teacher at Hormisdallen nursery and primary school expressed delight upon hosting such a big day in world’s sport.
Kalyango believes this will be a major push factor to boosting sports in this school.
“We are excited to host the Olympic Day at Hormisdallen nursery and primary school. The school is spacious with enough facilities and the pupils were all willing to take part in the different games. We look forward training the pupils in the different games as they aspire to become future Olympians” Kalyango noted.
A couple of pupils as Nicole Nina Kirabo, Alice Siannel Turungi, Hannah Letasi, Halton Ssempeera, Michelle Nabatanzi, Joyce Ndagire and others were glad to take part in the various games.
The Olympic day is celebrated every 23rd June of the calendar. This has been celebrated since 1948 with the idea of promoting and celebrating the Olympic ideals.
The Olympic Day is developing into much more than a run or just a sport event.
