Fufa’s decision to include a select team (Uganda Cranes) in the pre-season Fufa Super 8 tournament has left many unanswered questions by the FA.

Ordinarily, the competition is meant for the teams that finish in the top eight places of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

However, with the inclusion of the Select team, URA which finished 8th last season now misses.

“It was an overriding decision that we were never told about as a club but something that popped up in the CEOs meeting with Fufa,” URA Chief Executive Officer Allan Munaaba told Kawowo Sports.

“We were ready and hoped to use the competition to fine tune the squad for the new season ahead but that it is what is,” he added.

Fufa communications director Ahmed Hussein the decision was reached following a request by the national team technical staff to have players active since by the time of the Afcon 2025 qualifiers opening matches in September, the league wouldn’t have started.

“The players in the Select squad will be assessed as well by the Uganda Cranes technical team with an eye on impressing to break into the senior team for the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers that start in September,” explained Hussein.

“The players already in the set-up of the Uganda Cranes will use the chance to cement their positions by keeping high levels of physical and mental strength ahead of the campaign. The clubs will use the tournament to fine-tune their squads for the new season,” he added.

Shockingly, 10 of the summoned 29 players for the select team are from URA which leaves Munaaba asking; “So will URA get some prize money in case the select team wins the competition or whatever money they will get depending on their position?”

According to Hussein, the select team which will be fully facilitated by the FA can win the trophy but not prize money like it happens in some competitions where guest teams don’t get all benefits.

At its initiation, the Fufa Super 8 attracted the top six teams from the UPL and two group leaders from the Fufa Big League before it was merged into a single national group.

To Fufa President Moses Magogo, Fufa Super 8 tournament is a just a name that doesn’t necessarily mean the top 8 teams of the top tier.

With such remarks, it is easy to see any team not in the top eight of the top tier in the near future as long as a directive from FUFA deems it fit.
