The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) has issued a statement concerning the ongoing campaign on X (formerly Twitter) related to the events of July 23, 2024 dubbed #March2Parliament.
The council expressed concerns over being consistently tagged in politically charged discussions by certain activists, noting that these mentions do not reflect IRCU’s mission or activities.
The IRCU notes that they acknowledge the challenge of corruption in Uganda and the need to combat it.
However, it emphasizes the importance of structured dialogue over anonymous social media activism, which it finds counterproductive. The council reiterated its commitment to addressing concerns through dialogue rather than engaging in partisan or anonymous online debates.
In a crucial part of the statement, the IRCU categorically distanced itself from the planned #March2Parliament protest on July 23, 2024.
The council clarified that it does not participate in organizing protests or demonstrations, as this is not its mode of operation.
Instead, the IRCU works through orderly means and proper channels to engage with public offices and officials.
The statement has sparked furious reactions from netizens, many of whom expressed disappointment and outrage over the council’s stance.
Despite the backlash, the IRCU stood firm in its position, stating that it operates within the framework of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, respecting the people’s rights while choosing dialogue over protest.
By issuing this statement, the IRCU notified the police and the general public that it is not affiliated with the #March2Parliament demonstrations and urged everyone to disregard any claims suggesting otherwise.
