Uganda is among the 206 countries in the world that will take part in the Summer Olympic Games of XXXIII in Paris city, France (26th July to 11th August 2024).

The East African country will be represented by a gallant team of 25 athletes at the forthcoming games.

The bulk of the participants are runners (21) in the different distances. The other four come from Swimming (2), Rowing (1) and Cycling (1).

Many of the team members depart officially from Entebbe International Airport on Tuesday, 23rd July 2024 ahead of the opening ceremony.

They will meet the advance party already in Paris that has the Chef De Mission Moses Mwase, UOC general secretary Beatrice Ayikoru, athlete Grace Kathleen Noble and others.

Team Uganda was officially flagged off by the president, H.E General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at Entebbe State House.

“Please exhibit discipline, sportsmanship and magnanimity. I urge you to use this opportunity to build a character of resilience. Sports people do not give up until they win. I wish you safe travels and good luck.” the president urged upon flagging off the team.

Team composition:

The athletics team has 10 men with US based sprinter Tarsis Gracious Orogot taking part in the 200m race.

Tom Dradriga will compete in 800m. The long distance cluster has Jacob Kiplimo (5000m/10000m), double world record holder Joshua Cheptegei (5000m/10000m), Oscar Chelimo (5000m), Martin Magengo Kiprotich (10000m), Leonard Chemonges (3000m Steeplechase) as well as three marathoners; Victor Kiplangat, Stephen Kissa and Andrew Rotich Kwemoi.

Uganda Athletics team to 2024 Olympics

The women pool has 11 athletes; Halimah Nakaayi (800m), Winnie Nanyondo (1500m), Joy Cheptoyek (5000m/10000m), Esther Chebet (5000m), Belinda Chemutai (5000m), Sarah Chelangat (10000m), Annet Chemengich Chelangat (10000m), Peruth Chemutai (3000m Steeplechase), Stella Chesang (Marathon), Mercyline Chelangat (Marathon) and Rebecca Cheptegei (Marathon).

There are six coaches who will handle the athletes to include; Benjamin Njia, Peter Chelangat, Grace Chesang, Faustino Kiwa, Paul Okello and Adrianus Ruiter.

Swimming:

Two swimmers will represent the country in the water sport of swimming; Gloria Muzito (100m Freestyle) and Jesse Ssengonzi (100m Butterfly).

These two swimmers will be handled by Tonny Kasujja as head coach.

Cycling:

In cycling, Charles Kagimu will compete in the men’s road race. Uganda makes a return to the Olympics in cycling after 40 since since Los Angeles in 1984 when the duo of Ernest Buule and Muhamad Mukasa took part.

Kagimu’s coach is Ishaka Bukenya.

Rowing:

US Based Grace Kathleen Noble returns to the Olympics for the second time in a row. Noble will compete in the single scull rowing event and shall be coached by the duo of Dr. James Anthony Martinez and Batenga Nakisozi.

Competition schedule:

Rower Noble gets Uganda underway on 27th August until 3rd August 2024.

Swimming for Gloria Muzito (100m freestyle) starts Tuesday 30 July 2024 with the heats and Semifinal and ends Wednesday 31 July 2024.

Another swimmer Jesse Ssengonzi (100m Butterfly) will dive into the swimming pools on Friday 2 August till 03 August 2024.

Cyclist Kagimu will be in action on 3 August 2024.

The Athletics program starts on 2 August with women’s 800m and 5000m R1 and a final in the men’s 10,000m.

Technical officials:

Uganda has four technical officials that will officiate at these games. These are Joseph Collins Ssemmanda (Modern Pentathlon), Hajji Salim Musoke (Weightlifting), Max Kanyerezi (Aquatics) and Shamira Nabadda (Football).
