Prime Minister Nabbanja’s Impromptu Visit to Kayunga Hospital Debunks Oxygen Plant Allegations

KAYUNGA, Uganda – The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja, conducted an unannounced visit to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital on Thursday to investigate claims that the hospital’s oxygen plant has been non-functional for two years. The allegation, raised by a journalist to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, prompted the President to task the Prime Minister with verifying its validity.

Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital, one of the few specialized facilities in Uganda, serves over 10 districts and has been a flagship project of the Museveni administration’s efforts to elevate healthcare standards. The hospital was upgraded from a district hospital to a regional referral center, reflecting significant government investment.

During her visit, Prime Minister Nabbanja expressed astonishment at the hospital’s excellent condition, dismissing the oxygen plant allegation as “a big lie to the Head of State.” She confirmed that the facility produces sufficient oxygen not only for Kayunga but also for neighboring regions. “This hospital is a shining example of what the government is doing for our people,” Nabbanja stated, describing Kayunga as the “cleanest hospital in Uganda” with highly professional staff.

In response to the hospital’s large catchment area, the Prime Minister pledged to provide a CT scan to further enhance its diagnostic capabilities. She also urged the community to support President Museveni in the upcoming 2026 general elections, citing the hospital’s success as a testament to his leadership.

Dr. Robert Sentongo, the Hospital Director, echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, emphasizing the facility’s professionalism. He noted that laboratory tests and results from Kayunga are accredited and globally recognized. However, Dr. Sentongo highlighted challenges, including the high demand for emergency services and cesarean sections, as many mothers arriving at the hospital are high-risk cases that lower-level health facilities cannot handle.

The Minister of State for Guidance and Planning, Hon. Amos Lugolobi, commended the President for the initiative, describing Kayunga Hospital as one of the most efficient healthcare facilities in Uganda. He cautioned journalists against spreading unverified information before the “Fountain of Honor,” referring to President Museveni.

The Kayunga District Chairperson also expressed gratitude to the President for his support of health facilities in the region and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to constructing the Kayunga-Bbaale-Galiraaya road. The Chairperson promised to rally community support for Museveni in the 2026 elections.
