From House Girl to One of Africa’s Wealthiest Women: A Malawian Woman Shares Her Journey

My name is Mary, and I come from Blantyre in Malawi. For many years, my life was full of pain and struggle. I was born into a poor family, and after finishing school, there was no money for me to pursue higher education. Out of desperation, I began working as a house girl in the city. My salary was very low, but I accepted it because I had no other options. Every day, I wondered if I would ever break free from that life.
Even though I worked tirelessly, I was treated with very little respect. I would wake up early, clean, cook, and do everything else, yet at the end of the day, I remained poor and hopeless. I cried many nights, feeling that my dreams of becoming successful were unattainable.
