You have not been following the current National Rally Championship if the name Musa Ssegaabwe does not ring a bell by now.

Ssegaabwe is the talk of the rally fraternity. His racing style has been sending fans into ecstasy.

“The guy went to Cyprus to learn driving before…” “Musa was in a rally school in the UK that is why he drives like that…”

“The man drives so well, where did he come from?”

Those are some chants one will hear at the local rally events.

Unknown to many, Ssegaabwe has previously had a rallying experience as a co-driver. In 2019, Ssegaabwe called the notes for Peter Kalule in the season-opening in Mbarara. He showed up again during the 2022 FMU sprint.

He switched seats last November; starting in the autocross championship.

“I have always loved speed since when I was a young boy in Luwero. I used to watch rallies every time they came to Luwero. And I continued following the rally as an adult and became a spectator following rallies around,” said Ssegaabwe.

“I took my speed to the streets until I decided to bring it to rally. It was in February last year when I decided to buy a rally car. I secured the car in November. And that was it,” he added.

With Mathius Kiyegga calling the notes, the crew comfortably leads the Clubman Rally Championship having registered four victories in five championship events.

“I believe my heart is just strong. And I go for what I feel I can do. I have trained myself to be a clean driver; push where necessary, and that has paid off in the CRC championship.”

Ssegaabwe admits that it is the time put into practice that is paying off.

“I have never gone abroad to learn rallying as many people say. I just gave myself time to learn the car. I did a lot of practice before joining. I don’t wait for an event to get my car out, I often go to my farm with my co-driver and we practice as much as we can. That is why we connect well,” he said.

The writing is on the wall of Ssegaabwe’s chances of becoming a national rally champion. But he is taking it in bits.

“At the moment it is CRC. Next year we shall be in NRC. We shall continue with the same car in NRC until we feel it is the right time to upgrade,” he said.
