From Street Hustler to Thriving Entrepreneur!! A Real Story of Transformation

My name is Brian Ssewanyana, and I was born and brought up in Kisenyi, one of the most densely populated and underprivileged neighborhoods in Kampala, Uganda. I lived with my mother and two younger sisters in a tiny one-room home. Life was a daily struggle. My father left us when I was just five years old, and from then on, my mother had to take on both parental roles. She worked as a vegetable vendor at the market, but what she earned could barely keep us going.
I left school after completing Primary Six because we simply couldn’t manage the school fees. To help support my family, I started selling cold bottled water and sodas on the streets of Kampala. Each morning, I would rise early, go to Owino Market to buy a few cartons of bottled water, and then walk through town trying to sell them. I made my way from traffic junctions to bus terminals, calling out to customers under the scorching sun.
