Byaruhanga Cools Besigye Release Hopes, Rules Out Gen. Saleh-Led Negotiations
Senior Presidential Advisor on Political Mobilisation Moses Byaruhanga has dismissed reports that behind-the-scenes negotiations are underway to secure the release of jailed opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Appearing on a local television political program, Byaruhanga rejected claims that General Salim Saleh was leading specific government-to-opposition talks targeting Besigye’s freedom.
He noted that he spoke directly with Gen. Saleh, who denied managing any dialogue focused strictly on Besigye's case. Instead, Byaruhanga clarified that Gen. Saleh is looking toward broader, general cooperation between the government and the opposition to support national development.
“Yes, it is okay to have divergent political views, but if you go further to commit other offences, then that is a different issue that has to be handled differently,” Byaruhanga said.
Treason Case Must Proceed in Court:
Byaruhanga maintained that Besigye faces a serious criminal treason case and must let the judicial process handle the matter rather than relying on a political shortcut. He emphasized that the detention is tied to alleged criminal conduct rather than political differences.
Bail Decisions Remain Judicial:
Addressing criticisms over Besigye's repeated bail denials, Byaruhanga stated that bail is a discretionary power of the presiding judge, pointing out that defense applications have also contributed to timeline delays.
No Individual Deal in the Works:
While broader government-opposition engagements remain possible, Byaruhanga reiterated that no specific dialogue exists to bargain for Besigye’s release outside the court system.
