Three Ugandan riders will make their debut at the world Motocross of Nations championship taking place from 4-6th October in Matterley Basin, UK.

Regarded as the “Olympics of Motocross”, nations from across the globe select three of their best riders to compete in the championship to determine the best in the world of motocross.

All the three riders are national champions in their respective classes.

While Waleed Omar will be in the MX open class, Orland will compete in the MX2 and Sentamu in MXGP.

Since last year, the local motorsport federation embraced international events, sending riders to compete with the world’s best. It all started last year with the Junior MX championships.

“The time I came in as the new DVP, the plan for international events was already set and I just carried it on,” says Arthur Blick Jr, the multiple MX champion and the current Deputy Vice President in charge of motorcycling.

“The aim is to step up our levels in the sport. I travelled with the Junior team to Netherlands this year, and the experience was amazing. And we picked lessons that we shall adopt to make our sport better,” he added.

The international events come into the motocross calendar at the time when the discipline is taking a bit of a slump.

“It is true that our motocross is a bit stagnant. But these are events I already found in the pipeline. And true, there is a lot of experience gained for both riders and officials.”

“Generally, if we put that experience into action, and we apply it into our championships, definitely we would lift the level of motocross in Uganda,” said Blick Jr.

Going international attracts big expenditure on the team, a challenge the team is yet to face.

“Honestly, these levels of competition are so expensive. Luckily, we get some support from the federation and government. And the rest comes from individual pockets. These are some of the issues we shall have to review and see whether we need to take a break from international events and focus on regional events. So, a review will be done.”

“But as much as we have such a challenge, there are positives in the events. First, it shows us were our level is, so that we plan moving forward to achieve and to step up the level. It will be the base to start a development we need in the sport,” he added.

Team Uganda is scheduled to travel on 30th September ahead of the first training session on 2nd October in Matterley Basin.
