Top News!! Nationwide Strike Looms as Workers Call for Meeting with President Museveni

The Uganda Local Government Workers Union has given the government a three-week ultimatum to arrange a direct meeting with the President, warning that failure to do so could spark a nationwide strike. Workers say their concerns over delayed salary enhancements have been ignored for too long, and only the President can resolve the matter.

Union leaders, National Chairperson Emmanuel Gidudu and General Secretary Hassan Mudiba, stated that previous meetings with government officials have yielded no results, emphasizing that ministers alone cannot authorize the salary increases.

“We want to meet the President directly because our voices are not being heard,” the leaders said, noting that only the President can unlock the long-awaited salary adjustments.

Many local government employees say they are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. They argue that fair pay is overdue and crucial for maintaining morale and ensuring essential services, such as health, education, and administration, continue uninterrupted.

The union has formally written to the responsible minister, warning that if a meeting is not scheduled within three weeks, they will mobilize workers nationwide to strike, potentially disrupting key services across districts.

Observers say the coming weeks are critical. The government must decide whether to engage directly with the workers, while the union must keep its members united and ready. Ugandans are now watching to see if dialogue with the President will take place or if a strike will halt local government services.
