A 36-year-old woman named Sonya Massey called 911 in Springfield, Illinois, on Saturday, July 6. Massey believed someone was trying to break into her home.
The woman, who appeared to be in mental distress, reportedly asked officers not to hurt her. Instead, Massy was gunned down and left in a pool of blood as officers reportedly waited to render aid.
Now, her family and the Springfield community are seeking justice.

What Happened To Sonya Massey?
According to Carter, Massey called 911 about suspicious activity inside or around her home around 1 a.m. on July 6. Two officers arrived at her home. However, they did not locate an intruder on the premises.
Bodycam footage of the officers’ visit shows them later speaking with Massey, who appears to be in mental distress. Massey ultimately invites the officers into her home and begins to search for her identification.
Officers reportedly noticed a pot of boiling water on her stove and instructed her to turn it off. As she appears to comply with their orders, seemingly pouring the water down the sink, one of the officers, Deputy Grayson, backs away.
“Where you going?” Massey can be heard asking the officer.
In turn, Grayson replied, “Away from your hot steaming water.”
In a matter of seconds, Officer Grayson then places his hand on his gun holster and threatens to shoot Massey in her “f*****g face.” The woman apologizes and even ducks for cover. The deputy then fires multiple shots, shooting Massey in the head.
What Happened After The Shooting In The Woman’s Home?
The second officer immediately reports the shooting and attempts to retrieve his medical kit to render aid to Massey. Meanwhile, Deputy Grayson tells his partner Massey “is done.”
“You can go get it, but that’s a headshot,” he says.
After several minutes, the partner retrieves the kit and begins rendering aid to Massey, who is still “gasping for air.” As more officers arrive, Deputy Grayson alleges that Massey came at him with boiling water. Furthermore, he even refers to her as a “b***h” who is “crazy.”
