Uganda’s most on-form professional golfer Ronald Rugumayo improved from a 4-over 74 during the opening round of the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Pro Open to a 2-under-69 in the subsequent round.

During day two on Thursday, 5th September 2024, Rugumayo, a member of the Sunshine Tour recorded 8 pars on holes 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 14 with 6 birdies (4, 7, 11, 12, 15 and 18) and 4 bogies (1, 13, 16, 17).

After completing 36 holes, he acknowledged the slow start that propelled him to improve on round two as he made the treasured cut to partake the cake of Shs 150,000,000 total cash kitty.

“I had a slow start on Wednesday and had to pull up my socks for an outstanding performance,” Rugumayo attested.

On Thursday, he made a drastic improvement with a 2-under score (69); scoring 34 on the front and 35 at the back nine.

This was the second-best score on the day after Rwanda’s Erneste Ndayisenga scored 3-under-68 to better his day-one mark of 75.

“I had a good score, the second best for the day. Coming to Friday, it is a moving day tomorrow and I will work hard to improve further,” Rugumayo stated.

An overnight leader from the opening day, Dayne Moore from Zambia, scored 2-over 73 during round two but remained 5 shots ahead of the second-placed Jastas Madoya.

Madoya who had played 66 on day one faltered with 5-over 76 on Thursday.

Moore, Madoya as well as Rwanda’s duo of Celestin Nsanzuwera and Erneste Ndayisenga will form the main pressure group for round three on Friday.

Zimbabwe’s Promise Sombreiro, Abraham Ainamani, Ronald Rugumayo (Uganda) and Mike Kisia will be part of the second pressure group.

Forty players made the cut. Of these, there are three amateurs; Adel Balala (Kenya), the newly crowned Uganda Amateur Open champion Joseph Reagan Akena and Titus Okwong.

Meanwhile, day two was lit up with an eye-catching hole-in-one shot from Kenya’s Erick Ooko Obura.

Ooko had the ace on the par-3 hole 2 with a 9-iron and a Titleist Pro V1x ball.

This was his fifth ace in his golfing career and the first in a major championship.
