While Black Pearls were expected to be women’s champions at the Entebbe 7s, Rhinos were the most unlikely champions in the men’s competition. Both came out on top after a dramatic Day Two and are seeded in Pool A for the Mbale 7s.

For the men, Pool C in Entebbe has morphed into Pool D while the women’s pools are a pure carbon copy from last weekend.

Elgon Wolves, Mbale Elephants (men) and Mbale Eagles (women) are the home teams for the tournament which will be played at the Mbale Grounds. The invitational teams include fresh-off-the-block Kakira Simbas (men).

The national 7s series last visited Mbale in 2019 when a shocking trend of events – host team boycotted its own event over sponsorship funds, referees demanded their arrears to be cleared, two vehicles parked in the middle of the pitch, and teams protesting against shorter halves per match – led to its cancellation.

Returning to the slopes of Mount Elgon is an opportunity for Mbale Rugby to redeem themselves and revive the sport’s growth in the region.
