France rallied from a goal down to out-muscle a 10-man Egypt 3-1 (in extra-time) during the second semi-final at the on-going 2024 Olympics on Monday night.
Egypt bossed the game through Mahmoud Saber’s 62nd minute goal at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon city.
The hosts gallantly fought back to equalize through Jean Philippe Mateta’s goal with 7 minutes to play and push the game into extra time.
Egypt lost Omar Fayed in the second minute of extra-time with a second bookable offence by Hector Said Martinez Sorto from Honduras.
Mateta then scored France’s second goal in the 99th minute, off Kiliann Sildillia’s assist.
Michael Olise netted France’s third goal to seal their slot in the final.
“The game’s not over yet! Now it’s time to go for the gold medal. As far as tonight’s match is concerned, Egypt are an exceptional team and we had a lot of chances. It was a fantastic match. We’ve got one extra day to recover before facing a tough opponent in Spain. They’re a nation that wins everything, whether in the junior or women’s categories, but we’re going there to win the gold medal.” Thierry Henry, French coach.
“We were winning until the 80th minute, conceded a goal and received a red card. It changed everything. France are a strong team, but we were prepared to win. It’s football. Congratulations to France, they did a great match too. Now we have to raise our heads and focus on Morocco.” Rogerio Micale, Egypt coach.
The first semi-final witnessed Spain recover from a goal down to eliminate Morocco 2-1.
Soufiane Rahimi gave Morocco the lead on 37 minutes at the Stade Orange Velorome in Marseille.
Spain equalized through Fermin Lopez in the 66th minute before the match winner from Juanlu Sanchez with five minutes to play.
The game was officiated by Ilgiz Tantashev from Uzbekistan.
The final between France and Spain will be played on Friday, 9th August 2024 whilst the bronze medal match (Egypt against Morocco) will take place on Thursday, 8th August 2024.
