SC Villa failed to make a winning return to the CECAFA Kagame Cup after drawing goalless with South Sudan’s El Merriekh Bentiu.
The Jogoos, playing at the regional competition for the first time in 19 years were dominant but failed to create meaningful opportunities to get the desired goal.
Dusan Stojanovic gave starting debuts to Denis Kaka Omony and Najib Yiga who had an opportunity in the first half but saw his effort go wide.
UPL MVP Patrick Kakande also had a chance but sent a tame effort straight at the goalkeeper.
In the same group, Rwanda’s APR beat Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars 1-0 in the late game on the opening day to move top of group C.
In the earlier matches, Al Wadi of Sudan beat JKU 1-0 and the same scoreline was registered between Coastal Union of Tanzania and Dekedaha of Somalia with the host club winning the game.
Action continues on Wednesday with two Group B matches on card. Sudan’s Al Hilal will take on ASAS Djibouti Telecom, while Gor Mahia FC (Kenya) battle Zambian Premier League champions Red Arrows FC.
The top team in each of the three groups and the best runners up from any of the groups will automatically qualify for the semi-final stage.
