How Uganda has fared against Afcon 2025 opponents in the past

That Uganda Cranes will face South Africa, South Sudan and Congo in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers is now known following a draw held in Johannesburg on Thursday.

The qualifying matches will be played in September, October and November this year with the top two teams in each of the 12 groups qualifying for the finals to be played in Morocco starting December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.

The Cranes will fancy their chances of returning to Afcon for the first time since 2019 but how have they fared against the trio in the past? We dig deep.

Uganda vs South Africa H2H

The first ever meeting was in 2004 in the Fifa 2026 World Cup qualifiers with Bafana Bafana beating the Cranes 1-0 at Namboole courtesy of Benni McCarthy penalty.

South Africa also won the reverse fixture 2-1 leaving the Cranes with no chance to qualify for the event that was held in Germany.

The other two meetings were in Cosafa 2019 in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw before Cranes lost 4-2 on penalties and the most recent a friendly in 2021 which ended 3-2 in favour of Bafana Bafana.

Uganda vs Congo H2H

Six of the past seven meeting have been competitive with only two international friendlies; Uganda lost 2-1 in 1965 and then won 3-1 in 1973.

The competitive matches include a 2-1 defeat in the All-Africa Games on July 21, 1965.

Uganda also beat Congo 3-1 in the group stages enroute to reaching the 1987 Afcon finals.

The last defeat against Congo was in the 2013 Afcon qualifiers in 2012 – 3-1 in Brazzaville which was overturned with a 4-0 win at Namboole.

The most recent meetings came in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers for 2018 – Cranes 1-0 at Namboole and held the Congolese away.

The previous six meetings picked here are the competitive starting with a 4-0-win CECAFA Challenge Cup in 2012.

The only defeat came in the last meeting; 1-0 away in Nairobi when Tito Okello scored the winner to literally end Uganda Cranes chances of reaching the 2021 Afcon finals.

The other meetings have been in qualifiers for CHAN where the Bright Stars recorded a goalless draw in Juba before Paul Mucureezi scored four-times at Lugogo.
