“Doors Were Closing Everywhere” What Helped a Ugandan Man Finally Attract Opportunities

For a long time, I believed that hard work was enough to change a person’s life. I used to wake up every morning before sunrise, determined to chase opportunities and build a better future. But despite my effort, my life remained stuck in the same painful cycle. My name is Paul, and I live in Mukono, Uganda. I share my story because I know I am not the only one who has worked tirelessly yet gained nothing in return.

My struggle began shortly after I left my previous job. I expected to find something new quickly because I had experience and good recommendations. But every opportunity slipped away from me at the very last minute. Sometimes, an employer would promise to call and never do so. Other times, I got shortlisted but never selected. I started applying everywhere—Kampala, Jinja, Mbarara—yet nothing changed. Even small opportunities that I used to depend on suddenly disappeared.

At first, I thought maybe it was just bad timing. But as months passed, I realized it was something deeper. Every door I tried to open closed immediately. Friends who once supported me suddenly became distant. A business idea I started collapsed in less than two months. Even people who owed me money refused to pay me back. I can’t count the number of times I went home feeling defeated, wondering if God had forgotten me.

My financial situation became worse every day. I fell behind on rent, and feeding my family became a struggle. My wife began carrying all the weight, and even though she tried to encourage me, I could see the worry in her eyes. I felt worthless. I felt like a man who had lost his place in the world.

One evening, while visiting a friend in Nansana, I opened up about everything I had been facing. I told him how every opportunity seemed to reject me before I even got a chance.
