It is the third day of the 83rd edition of Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateurs’ Golf Open Championship at the par-71 lakeside Entebbe Club.

Golfers in the main cluster (gross) will on Friday, 30th August 2024 mark their third round to make 54 holes of action.

After two rounds under dry weather conditions, the heavens have set loose on Friday morning and this will definitely affect play positively or negatively, depending on one’s style of play and preference.

The main group will be joined the subsidiary golfers as there will be tee-offs concurrently on the 1st and 10th tees.

The main pressure group for the gross category has the current leader Joseph Cwinya-ai, Joseph Reagan Akena, Abdul Kakeeto and Michael Tumusiime, teeing off at 1:10 PM.

“I know how to contain the pressure because I have been in such a situation on several occasions. I want to win it (the main open) for myself, sponsors, family and fans” Cwinya-ai remarked after playing 2-over 73 on round two.

The second pressure group of Ibrahim Ssemakula, Samuel Bazaale, Titus Okwong and Abdallah Kakooza will drive off at 1:00 PM.

At 12:50 PM, It will be Elton Thembo, Joseph Kasozi, John Musiimenta and Kenyan Adel Balala.

Balala led day one with a 2-under-69 gross mark before fading with +11 (82) on day two.

12:40 PM has the defending champion Godfrey Nsubuga, Entebbe club’s Musa Kirya, Kenyan Ebill Omolo and Paul Habyarimana.

Burundi’s Salum Hakizimana, Kenyan Rafael Lemingani and the Ugandan duo of Brian Mugabe and Ivan Sekulima will drive off by half past noon.

Some of the subsidiary golfers in action will include the likes of Edgar Ayebare, Michael Nimoh, Fred Kabanda, Milton Ocen, Andrew Oluka, Hannington Mulumba, Kenneth Tumusiime, David Wandera, Kaka Matama, Fred Rurangirwa, Gabriel Addi, Patrick Ouni, David Kateregga, Charles Kizito, Suresh Patel, Lloyd Busuulwa, among others.

About the Uganda Golf Open:

Since 1932, the Uganda Golf Open and sponsors have evolved over the years.

This year and the past seasons, Johnnie Walker is the lead sponsor with players from hosts Uganda,Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan and Rwanda.

H. Davidson won the inaugural edition. The open only missed out on two different occasions; between 1940-1947 (World War) and 1979-1980 (Political insurgency in Uganda).

Jinja Club’s legend Sadi Onito (Rest in Peace) has the record number of titles won (12) in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1996.

The open is the signature championship of Uganda Golf Union (UGU).
