BREAKING NEWS!! Uganda Local Government Workers Demand President’s Intervention, Threaten Nationwide Strike

The Uganda Local Government Workers Union has given the government three weeks to organize a direct meeting with the President. The union says their demands for salary enhancements have been delayed for too long, and only the President can resolve the issue. If their call is ignored, they have threatened to stage a nationwide strike.

Union leaders, National Chairperson Emmanuel Gidudu and General Secretary Hassan Mudiba, explained that they have already held three meetings with government officials, but no progress was made. They insist that ministers do not have the authority to approve the long-awaited salary adjustments. “We want to meet the President directly because our voices are not being heard,” the leaders said, stressing that only his intervention can end the standoff.

Many local government employees are struggling with the rising cost of living. They argue that fair pay is overdue and necessary to maintain morale and ensure that key services—such as education, health, and administration—continue to run smoothly.

The union has already written to the responsible minister, warning that if their demand is not met within the three-week deadline, they will mobilize workers across the country for a strike. Such a move could disrupt essential services in districts and communities nationwide.

Analysts say the next few weeks will be crucial. The government must decide whether to engage directly with the workers, while the union must keep its members united and ready for action. The entire country now waits to see whether talks with the President will take place—or if Uganda will face a nationwide strike that could paralyze local government services.
