Plascon Mongers find themselves in unfamiliar territory since 2014. Whereas Eagles and Warriors are returning to the relegation playoff for the second successive season, the Entebbe boys, who haven’t been at their best this season, shall have to find their form this time round to avoid the drop.
In their way this weekend, stands Warriors RFC, a team that has just collected its second win of the season against the embattled Eagles. The Warriors played out two legs of exciting relegation playoffs last season, coming out on top on both occasions against the Rams. This is a group that knows its way around escaping the jaws of relegation, and therefore, a smash-and-grab is still on the table, as early as this Saturday when they face a struggling but more formidable side in the Plascon Mongers.
In boxing, when a pugilist is getting battered and they are knocked down, it isn’t unfamiliar for the referee to ask them whether they’d like to continue with the bout. Following that logic, it is clear that the Elgon Wolves are on the ropes and out of their depth here, needing a break to regather themselves. Administrative challenges, financial constraints and divisions in their camp haven’t given them a fair fight at striving in the league, let alone surviving.

With the promoted Victoria Sharks overachieving as expected, someone has to fill those shoes in the bottom 4, and unfortunately for Mongers, the baton has landed on them. They sit in the tenth position, just a point behind the Warriors, making this weekend’s fixture a must-win for them if they want to finish ninth and get a favourable fixture in the playoffs, against the confirmed bottom side, Elgon Wolves.
The Warriors and Eagles are flirting with relegation again, and maybe this time they may not be as fortunate, but one thing history reminds us is that we can not count any team out, unless it is Elgon Wolves.
