The U-19 Girls World Cup Qualifiers are less than a month away and teams have decided to take the preparations a notch higher.

The last qualifiers caught everyone unaware with most nations still recovering from the effects of Covid therefore most teams were not well prepared.

Tanzania was the most fortunate of the teams at the qualifiers in 2022 in Botswana because they were never affected by lockdowns, they were everyone’s favourite to go all the way to the final but somehow they failed at the final hurdle losing to Rwanda. Uganda finished fourth in the qualifiers, losing to Rwanda in the semifinals and two years later, they will be at looking at making amends this year.

Uganda is clearly learning its lesson from two years with early preparations for the qualifiers. There will be 14 teams at the qualifiers in Kigali but only one team earns the right to represent Uganda at the World Cup in Malaysia next year.

Uganda U-19 girls will host one of their rivals at the qualifiers Tanzania for a five-match T20 series from July 20th – 27th. The games will all be played at the Lugogo Cricket Oval with morning and afternoon games scheduled. The games will be used by both sides to test their squad combinations and game plans with a month away from the qualifiers.

Uganda has named a strong side that will be led by Jimia Muhamad who was part of the Kwibuka winning squad in Rwanda. Malisa Ariokot, Lona Anyait, Patricia Timong, and Immaculate Nandera all have experience of playing for the Victoria Pearls with some new exciting talent of Irene Mutoni, Erex Aronda, Giringish Nabulime added to the squad.

The second school term has affected the preparations for the side because most of the players are in school and different parts of the country. The team is composed of players from Soroti, Mukono, Masaka and Jinja therefore getting all of them in camp is a challenge. However, at least six players of the selected team were part of the Kwibuka winning squad in Kigali this year therefore they have players familiar with the conditions in Kigali.

The pressure will be on players such as Marisa Ariokot, Lona Anyait and Jimia Muhamad who have put in some strong performances at the senior level for Victoria Pearls. Yusuf Nanga and Ivan Kakande are the two men in charge of the Baby Victoria Pearls and will be hoping that the lessons learned in 2022 can help them progress to the World Cup.

Uganda will be hoping that the U-19 Girls can go to Kigali and upset the odds by securing a World Cup place for the first time. The first edition of the U-19 Girls World Cup was hosted in South Africa last year and won by India.
