Moustapha Mukasa is now the new National Rally Championship leader.

The Drug Express-sponsored crew, in the Mitsubishi Evo9, pulled through from leg one misfortunes to secure another podium in the weekend’s Fort Portal Rally.

The crew suffered a broken shock, coupled with a gearbox failure in the morning loop. As if that was not enough, they narrowly survived a moment in the last hairpin of the power stage that could have ended it all for them.

They finished third, and with it, the top spot on the NRC leaderboard with 224 points; 21 points more than second-placed Ronald Sebuguzi.

“We are happy with the results. We had a tough day in the first leg. We lost a bit of time and went down on standings.”

“Sunday has been better, and we thank God for that because we are still in contention to maintain our lead on the championship,” said Mukasa.

Mukasa’s seasonal target was to finish as many events as he could. However, with the trend pointing to a clear opportunity for the title, Mukasa plans to stay on top till the season ends.

“The earlier strategy remains till the end of the season. But with the current standings, we will obviously have the title in mind. We will be watching every move we make going forward. By God’s grace we shall get there,” added Mukasa.

The crew must target a top-two finish in the remaining two events as well as capitalising on the Power Stage points to actualise their championship dream.

The sixth round of the NRC heads to Gulu district on the weekend of 11-13th October.

Top three drivers’ Standings after round five.

  1. Moustapha Mukasa – 224 points
  2. Ronald Sebuguzi – 203
  3. Jas Mangat – 200
