Busoga Kingdom, this weekend, celebrates its tenth coronation anniversary of their king, Kyabazinga Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV. The main event will be held on Friday, September 13 at Bukungu Landing Site in Budiope.

However, a walkable distance from the Kyabazinga’s palace in Bugembe lies the Kyabazinga Stadium. Here, a small matter of the fifth round of the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series, the Kyabazinga 7s, will take place from September 14-15. And that’s where our focus, amidst the cultural jubilations, will be.

The Kyabazinga 7s event is hosted by Barbarians, plus Trojans and Titans under the Walukuba Rugby franchise. The other home teams from the greater Jinja City are Hippos, Nile Rapids, and the new Kakira Simbas.

This year’s edition marks its third successive year on the calendar. The first edition in 2022 was won by Jinja Hippos and Black Pearls. Last year’s, the series finale, was won by Black Pirates and Black Pearls.

The holders come into the Kyabazinga 7s this year on the back foot. Both Black Pearls and Black Pirates lost the Cup Finals during the Gulu 7s and thus, are in Pool B for the weekend.

Men’s Pools for 2024 Kyabazinga 7s (invitational team*):

  • Pool A: Heathens, Elgon Wolves, Rams, Busitema Boons*.
  • Pool B: Pirates, KOBs, Mongers, Kakira Simbas*.
  • Pool C: Hippos, Buffaloes, Warriors, Mbale Elephants*.
  • Pool D: Walukuba Barbarians, Rhinos, Impis, Walukuba Trojans*.

Women’s Pools for 2024 Kyabazinga 7s (invitational team*):

  • Pool A: Thunderbirds, Avengers, Kitgum Queens, Walukuba Titans*.
  • Pool B: Black Pearls, Nile Rapids, She Wolves, Mbale Eagles*.

It promises to be a highly competitive tournament from start to finish. All teams are back to full complement, having missed their key players on national duty at the 2024 Willem Strauss International 7s in South Africa.
