Joshua Baraka: How to create a global hit

Joshua Baraka, who shot to global recognition with his hit single “Nana,” has offered valuable advice to fellow Ugandan artists on how to create international music that reaches a wider audience.

Since his breakthrough, Baraka has performed in various countries, collaborated with foreign artists, and gained substantial international airplay—achievements that have surprised even him, considering his relatively short time in the industry.

Baraka acknowledged that he didn’t anticipate breaking into the international music scene so quickly, but he attributes much of his success to a combination of factors.

When asked if Ugandan artists should prioritize singing in English to appeal to a global audience, Baraka stressed that a mix of English and Luganda can be effective.

He explained that incorporating English into Luganda songs can help international fans grasp the essence of the message.

They don’t have to fully understand it, but as long as they get an idea of what you’re saying and know the topic you’re singing about.

Beyond language, Baraka emphasized that the production quality and overall feel of a song often matter more.

He encouraged Ugandan artists to focus on creating a unique sound that could serve as a musical identity for the country.
