How Eze and Gyokeres Will Unlock Arsenal’s Attack This Season

The acquisitions of Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyökeres were undoubtedly the highlights of Arsenal’s busy summer transfer window. Eze, rejoining his boyhood club from Crystal Palace, is one of the Premier League’s most gifted ball-carriers, while Gyöokeres arrives from Sporting CP after an explosive campaign that saw him become one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.

Gyokeres has already hit the ground running, starting all three of Arsenal’s Premier League matches, including a brace against Leeds United. However, despite his scoring form, he hasn’t been receiving much of the ball, and his contributions have been limited by a lack of creative supply.

Arsenal have had a tricky start to the season, with  trips to Old Trafford and Anfield. Their 1-0 loss to Liverpool was particularly frustrating, as Arteta fielded a starting XI without a natural creative force. Eze, who replaced Martinelli in the second half, was a breath of fresh air and showed glimpses of the flair and inventiveness Arsenal had been missing.

Eze’s role going forward seems clear. With Martinelli struggling for form, Eze is expected to take his place on the left side of Arsenal’s attack. The 27-year-old England international brings flair, creativity, and elite ball-carrying ability. Eze operates best in the left half-space or as a free-roaming No. 10, where he can receive between the lines and drive at defenders. Arsenal have long lacked a midfielder capable of consistently unlocking deep blocks with guile and dribbling and Eze is the player to fill that gap.

What makes Eze and Gyokeres an exciting combination is how naturally they complement each other. Both players love to drift from the left, but in slightly different ways. Eze, who operates primarily from the left, can combine  with Gyökeres, who often drifts into the left half-space. Their fluid movement will create overloads, especially when Calafiori overlaps on the left flank, pulling defenders and freeing up space for Gyokeres to make diagonal runs into the centre.

In terms of style, Eze thrives with runners ahead of him, and Gyokeres is always looking to attack space. This means they will be a deadly pairing in transition. Eze’s vision and ability to carry the ball through the midfield, combined with Gyokeres’ pace and physicality, will give Arsenal more tactical flexibility and the ability to quickly exploit opposition defences.

The Key to Unlocking Arsenal’s Attack

Eze’s addition brings much-needed unpredictability to Arsenal’s play, especially in the final third. His ability to drive at defenders, play through balls, and create chances will without doubt elevate the team’s attacking threat. And when combined with Gyokeres, who offers a true striker’s instinct, the chemistry between the two will be vital for Arsenal’s push for silverware this season.
