Hope Secondary School won the second edition of the Imara Brave Girls League for girls U-18 years, organized by Reach A Hand, in partnership with The Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) and Planned Parenthood Global.

The day-long gala that attracted 14 schools was played at the International University of East Africa (IUEA) playground in Kansanga on Thursday, 6th June 2024.

The victors (Hope SS) edged God Cares SS 1-0 in the well contested finale, thanks to Alice Ayo’s goal.

This 7-aside tournament was meant to encourage women and girls to take up and excel in roles outside the traditional gender boxes and spheres.

Prizes:

Hope SS won a glittering giant trophy with a cash prize of Ug.Shs 6,000,000 whilst the runners up (God Cares SS) pocketed Ug.Shs 3,000,000 and Exodus College took home Ug.Shs 1,000,000.

A wide range of partners as the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (technical), Imara Girls Foundation, SRHR Alliance Uganda, Watoto Wasoka, Unesco, the girl child and her long walk to freedom, International University of East Africa (IUEA), 10 & bold, FOWODE, Imago Dei Fund, Planned Parenthood, Eddy Kenzo Foundation, Sauti Media Hub, NBS Sport, Movit and Aquafina, among others.

Humphrey Nabimanya, director of Reach A Hand lauded all the participating teams and saluted all the supportive partners.

He further stressed the importance of this tournament in the proper upbringing of the girl child.

We managed to hold the second edition of the Brave Girls football league. I thank the teams that took part and all the partners we worked with. This is just the second edition and the Brave Girls League will move a long away. There is need to value girls education, empower girls, help young girls speak out against the vices that affect them and also reduce on the number of school drop outs due to early pregnancies. The teams first engaged in the group stages before the before the quarter-finals, semi-finals and eventual finals.

Participating teams:

Among the participating teams were Exodus College, Atlas High School, Scoris International, Golden High School, Luzira SS, Bishop Cyprian Kihangire, Elite School, Boston High School, St Apollo Kaggwa peer Educators, Hope SS (Watoto), Church of God High School, Alliance High School, God Cares High School and St Elizabeth School.

Musicians as Yeka Benda, Eddy Kenzo and Alien Skin graced this tournament.
