Ham Launches Nakivubo Drainage Cleanup Ahead of Major Redevelopment Works

In a decisive step toward long-awaited redevelopment, city tycoon Hamis Kiggundu, widely known as Ham, has initiated a large-scale cleanup along the downstream stretch of the Nakivubo drainage channel. The exercise sets the stage for construction works expected to commence in the coming weeks.
Bulldozers, trucks, and teams of workers were mobilized to clear heaps of waste, silt, and debris clogging key sections of the channel — an area long associated with flooding, pollution, and poor sanitation. The operation marks the opening phase of a transformative project to modernize the Nakivubo Channel and its surrounding areas.
Ham, who is also spearheading the redevelopment of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, reaffirmed his commitment to improving the city’s drainage system while integrating new commercial infrastructure to drive urban renewal, enhance flood management, and promote public health in downtown Kampala.
“This initiative goes beyond cleaning. It’s about laying a foundation for sustainable development,” Ham said during the exercise. “We are determined to work hand in hand with relevant authorities to ensure this project delivers long-term benefits to the people and the city.”
The upcoming construction works will see the channel covered and modernized, with the addition of service lanes, water filtration chambers, and potential commercial spaces above the infrastructure — a design expected to restore both function and aesthetics to one of Kampala’s most critical drainage arteries.
Images and footage from the day’s efforts revealed dredging activities, piles of removed waste, and work crews preparing the ground for what is set to be a new chapter in Kampala’s urban transformation.
