From Despair to Distinction!! How a Medical Student Earned First Class After Nearly Quitting

My name is Brian Kato, and I’m from Fort Portal, Uganda. Since childhood, I had one goal — to become a doctor. I was always among the best performers in school, and when I finally secured admission to study medicine at one of Uganda’s leading universities, I felt my dream was finally within reach. But the path ahead was far more difficult than I had imagined. At one point, I came close to giving up. What followed is something I never expected, but it transformed my life forever.
My first two years at university went relatively smoothly. I studied diligently and passed all my exams. But everything started falling apart in my third year. No matter how many hours I studied, I failed even the simplest tests. I began forgetting things I had mastered. There were times I’d walk into an exam room and my mind would go completely blank. My lecturers began to doubt whether I belonged in medical school. My classmates distanced themselves from me. I became the laughingstock of my class. The harder I tried, the more I struggled.
